This posting is in the same vein as the meaning of life post the other day…
As I was rushing through the office hallway today, I was stopped by a friend. He was concerned about the layoffs that happened a few months ago at my workplace, and wondered if I was affected at all by it. I told him that I wasn’t laid off, but am thinking about getting out anyway next year. So the conversation went on and on about what my plans are for the next few years. It then took a turn to questions about his daughter who’s in college and then about his son, who is about to enter college. He remarked, “one more year, and my son will enter college, and then four years later I won’t have any more reason to work.”

“So you’ll retire at that point?”, I asked.. intrigued by his statement. “Yes, he says”.

Quite often, my mind likes to wonder into this existentialist questions.. you would think, by being a Muslim, your purpose in life would be straightforward (if anyone have questions about this let me know). This is true, but that purpose is also very broad and open to interpretation of each individuals. As an exaggeration of my friends situation, his job will be done once he facilitates his children enough for them to be able to stand on their own. Then…what? If he dies, he will have no regrets — because that’s his exit criteria.

Of course, everything I said above is an exaggeration — I’m pretty sure he’s not that fatalistic, but my point is I have the same idea.

If you lose your usefulness in life.. why should you live?

What is my exit criteria? Quite frankly, I don’t have one, and I don’t very much care to define one. I will let Allah (that translates as ‘the God’ for non-Muslim audiences) determine that for me. I’ll just take one step at a time.
